FRIDGE FREESTYLN’ EP.17 @thekoreanvegan
The Dish
- Jackfruit Arancini
- Gochujang Bolognese
- Grapes, Parmesan & Celery
Primary Inspiration
I have always been inspired by Joanne’s storytelling and her ability to captivate, evoke emotions, and educate through her videos.
Joanne is Korean and her husband Anthony is Italian. I wanted to create a dish that represented these cultures and how beautifully they can come together.
Joanne elevates and shares Korean/Vegan food so beautifully and I wanted to try to do the same.
Secondary Inspiration
Anthony is a music professor/pianist, which is why I chose a piano-based audio. The song brings a tone and melody that is raw and vulnerable, yet calming and peaceful. Joanne has shared about her previous emotionally abusive relationship; the song to me reflects the sentiment of ending something painful and the feeling of a cleansed restart—where there’s peace, love, and lightness in everyday life.
I wanted to show Joanne’s personality in the components of the dish:
Bold/Strong
As a lawyer and creator, she is strong—advocating for what she believes in and not afraid to call things out and defend. The bolognese sauce is built with layers of ingredients to reflect Joanne’s many life experiences. Through time and slow braising, the ingredients develop into one beautiful sauce only achieved through patience.
Joanne externally is strong but internally also gentle and loving. That’s why the arancini has a crispy, strong exterior protecting the soft and creamy rice/jackfruit filling inside.
Gentle/Sweet
Grapes and celery leaves are added to provide sweetness and elegance. They balance the bold arancini and bolognese, symbolizing Joanne’s kindness, friendliness, and ability to balance her strong personality and messaging—bringing kind, refreshing perspectives to her audience.
